After a decade away, I’ve decided to resume documenting some of my many technology diversions.
A couple weeks back, I finally broke down and reworked my ArcadeCab.com site to make it more user-friendly. This was a long, long overdue task that had never quite made it to the top of my project list, but felt so good once it had been “completed.”
The technical side of my site looked pretty sad by comparison, so a couple nights ago I decided to start working on that, too. As it always seems to go with coding projects, the time flew by, but I ended up with something much better looking—at least to me.
A lot has changed in my home lab over the past few years. Getting VMware out of my house after 15+ years is one example, and I’ve picked up plenty of newer interests that could benefit others as I write about them.
Like everyone else in this space, skyrocketing component prices have affected how I’ve approached projects over the past year. Buying used enterprise drives or memory for home projects now requires some serious cost-benefit analysis. Doing more with less is my mantra of late. Fortunately, software I’ve relied on for years can still be found in my home (and offsite DC), and OpenMediaVault continues to be rock solid and widely used.
In the coming weeks, I plan to start adding posts relating to Proxmox, PBS, HomeAssistant, OpenMediaVault, some of the interesting uses I’ve found for them, and even the Reolink security cams I’ve been using for years and the completely local storage setup behind them.
There are plenty of other projects and experiments that will probably find their way here as well. That’s really what this site has always been about.
